Many generations in my family have bravely served in the various branches of the U.S. Military Services. During WW II, my father and his four siblings were all serving. I cannot imagine what my grandparents must have been going through during those years waiting to hear from their children when the only source of communication was by letter. Months would pass by without any word...and newspapers and radio became the only source of reliable information. The same existed for all families across our nation; everyone knew someone who was serving.
Today again, many families are either directly or indirectly personally invested in the war on terrorism. Parents, wives, husbands and children at home pray everyday to keep their loved ones safe. We stay busy going on with our daily routines but stay constantly aware of the inherent risks attached to war.
In an effort to be supportive of my son and help the severely injured returning troops, I am donating the net proceeds from the sales of my family's own seasoning, Uncle Gunny's Secret Seasoning & Rub. Homes For Our Troops will be the recipient. This charity is a national non-profit, non-partisan 501(c)(3) organization founded in 2004 by John Gonsalves, a construction supervisor from Massachusetts who wondered what was being done for returning servicemen and women with serious disabilities. HFOT is committed to helping those who have selflessly given to our country and have returned home with severe injuries since September 11, 2001. Donations of money, building materials and professional labor culminate in the process of building a home that provides maximum freedom of movement and the ability to live more independently.
The homes provided by Homes for Our Troops are given at NO COST to the Veterans.
Homes for Our Troops Has Been Named Top Rated Charity by American Institute of Philanthropy.
The American Institute of Philanthropy, one of the country’s premier charity watchdog organizations, has included Homes for Our Troops in their “Top-Rated Veterans & Military Charities”. Only 5 of the 32 Veterans charities rated by AIP are included in the Top-Rated Category.

A Season For Soldiers
My Uncle Fred Gunson, aka "Uncle Gunny", was a man
who loved people and delighted in serving their culinary needs. He acquired experience in the food industry in Des Moines, Iowa while running his own butcher shop and corner grocery store in the 1940's & 1950's, and then later a restaurant. He was a joyful man with kind words of encouragement for everyone. It was no surprise folks loved to come and just chat with "Gunny". At home, the kitchen and the garden out
back were his territories. The meals were always wonderful not only because of his natural cooking and creating skills, but also due to attentive assistance lovingly offered from my Aunt Marney, his wife. Together, they lavishly showered delight in serving their guests. Many delicious entrees were produced from their tiny kitchen; among them were his ham loaf, spaghetti and meatballs and pot roast...down home comfort food! Through his gardening and constant thirst to create special meals came the development of his seasoning, and what our family affectionately refers to as Uncle Gunny's Secret Seasoning & Rub. It enhances the flavor of every vegetable dish, salad, meat, chicken , fish and even scrambled eggs! Whether you prefer fried, baked, roasted or grilled...you will delight in the result and keep coming back for more. As Uncle Gunny used to say, "Use it on everything but deserts!"
